Companion Settings and Preferences

Companion settings are split across two user preference tabs: Companion for behavior and tool approval, and Models for the AI provider and model.

Companion tab

Go to User Preferences > Companion to configure how Companion responds to you in the current workspace.

Custom Instructions

Custom Instructions are personal rules that Companion applies to your interactive threads. Use them to set context, preferred language, formatting, tone, role, or business assumptions.

Examples:

  • "Reply in Polish unless I ask otherwise."
  • "When summarizing calls, focus on risks, next steps, and owners."
  • "Draft emails in a concise customer-facing tone."

Response Style

Choose one of four default styles:

Concise: Short, direct answers that get straight to the point. Perfect when you just need the essentials, especially during fast-paced meetings.

Detailed: Comprehensive and well-explained responses. Great if you prefer step-by-step guidance or want in-depth summaries for more complex topics.

Technical: Uses precise language and formal explanations, ideal for engineering tasks, code help, or data analysis. Choose this when you want expert-level clarity.

Friendly: A warmer, more conversational tone that helps make information feel approachable - excellent for drafting emails, onboarding teammates, or anytime you want a human touch.

Just pick the style that fits your workflow, and Companion will adapt its responses to best support you.

Auto-Approve Tools

Companion can use tools such as meeting search, web search, notes, email, task managers, and CRM integrations. Actions that modify data usually ask for confirmation first.

You can auto-approve trusted tools with glob-style patterns:

  • send_email auto-approves only that exact tool.
  • gmail_* auto-approves Gmail tools that match the prefix.
  • *_read auto-approves read tools that match the suffix.
  • * auto-approves all matching tools and should be used very carefully.

Models tab

Go to User Preferences > Models to choose which provider and model Companion uses for new threads in this workspace.

Your workspace admin controls which providers and models are available under Workspace Settings > Intelligence. If you cannot find a model, it may not be enabled for your workspace.

Once a thread has messages, its model is locked. Start a new thread to switch models.

Coming soon options

You may see disabled toggles such as Auto-suggest Questions or Memory Enabled. These are marked as coming soon and do not change Companion behavior today.
